Trying to keep water from getting into your differentials or transfer cases, or even transmissions is difficult, but here are some tips to keep everything dry.
- The easiest tip is to run all of your vent lines up to a high point on the firewall. Do not run them into the cab, the smell will run you right out of that cab! Make sure to put a small filter or screen at the end of your vent lines to prevent insects from building nests in the ends of the open tubes.
- Overfill the differentials. This will make less room for water to get in. Some of the aftermarket diff covers have fill holes that are higher and allow you to easily overfill the differentials.
- If you insist on deep water runs, the swamp buggy racers all put air pressure in the diffs, transfer case, transmission, and even in the distributer cap. What this does is puts pressure on the inside of the lip seals to counter the water pressure trying to get in. The easiest way to do this is to use a battery operated aquarium aerator pump. Plumb the air lines to each location you want setting the pressure to around 4 PSI, run this only when you are going in the deep water.
- Finally, under the hood the best preventative is a spray bottle of WD40, just spray everything to keep your mud truck lubed, moving, and rust free.
Have fun mudding, and keep it maintained!
